Discussion:
Multiple gmapsupp.img files on Garmin

I have just accidentally discovered that it is possible to have
multiple gmapsupp.img files on my Garmin Oregon 300. Since I have not
seen this method mentioned anywhere else here it is.

Problem: I regularly update my local OSM data (since I am in Australia
from http://www.osmaustralia.org/garmin.php) but I also have other
maps, notably topographic, on the Garmin uit that I don't change. If I
upload the combined gmapsupp.img using MapSource it takes forever.
What would be nice would be to only upload the tiles that have changed
but the conventional advice is that there can only be one gmapsupp.img
file per drive i.e. one in the base unit and one on the micro SD card.

Method:

1. Upload to Garmin unit the unchanging maps. This creates (or
overwrites) a file called gmapsupp.img.

2. Disconnect the Garmin unit, switch on, then open and check the map uploaded.

3. Reconnect the Garmin unit to your computer and locate the
gmapsupp.img just created.

4. Change the file name to anything else e.g. gmapsupp-topo.img.

5. Disconnect the unit and switch on again. The original maps will
still be there.

6. Reconnect and upload a new set of maps. This will create a new
gmapsupp.img file but not overwrite the first lot of maps.

7. Repeat the steps above, changing the file name each time.

8. To overwrite data, change the name of the file back to gmapsupp.img
and upload new maps. (No sure if the file can't just be deleted but I
have been getting the "The map set is approximately nnMB, but only
nnnMB is available in the destination. Please select fewer maps and
try again." message from MapSource.)

There seems to be no limit to the number of files that can be handled
in this way. I have 16 at present making it very quick to add or
update existing data.

I will have to try this with my 76csx

Does it have to be loaded as gmapsupp.img and used once before each
renaming?

I have been placing extra *.img in named subdirs and copying to Garmin/ to
select, but being able to switch without a usb connect would be much better,
since states in New England are so small, I can drive across a corner of NH
or VT in not much longer than than it took to swap

Hi Bill

It seems that it does have to be uploaded as gmapsupp.img first.

When I start my Oregon 300, a "Loading maps" (or some such) message
appears at the bottom of the screen. My guess is that it must be
locating the maps in memory rather than in their files, hence the name
change does not cause them to be lost.

I have tried copying the files (not named gmapsupp.img) but they seem
to be ignored – they are only recognised if named gmapsupp.img at
least once.

Hi guys

Here is an extract from the Garmin Oregon Wiki
(http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Maps#toc20) on multiple img files.

"M17.) How do I use multiple map (.img) files to help me better manage maps
on my Garmin Oregon?

Even though Mapsource and MapInstall always save maps sets as
[drive]:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img this file can be renamed once it is on the
Oregon to any name (as of beta software 2.99) as long as the .img extension
is preserved. This is very helpful if you want to manage multiple maps sets,
say one for your home area that would change infrequently and one for a
travel destination(s) that you might change frequently. The steps for doing
this are:

1. Follow the procedure in M15 to create and download your home map set
2. Using a file explorer on your computer locate
[drive]:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img and rename the file to
[drive]:\Garmin\myhomemaps.img
3. Follow the procedure in M15 to create and download your travel map set

When you are done with your travel map set this file can be deleted and
replaced with a new map set for your next destination without having to
rebuild and transfer your home map set."

Previously to 2.99 you would have had to rename the gmapsupp.img to one of
only 2 other files names (although you could save gmapsupp.img also to the
MSD card). Renaming to anything else meant that the file could not be read
by the unit. Now you can rename gmapsupp.img to any name to fit more maps
on (provided space and only 1 gmapsupp.img on the unit and only 1 on MSD
etc).

I tried with a Vista HCx and didn't get it to work.

I have 1.3 coping strategies:

build my own maps of new england with splitter and mkgmap. create
GMAPI format files. install into roadtrip on a mac. (script on
request, or see the mkgmap-dev archives.)

use garmin mapinstall to merge my tiles, proprietary maps, and
free-beer garmin maps from the web (eg. NWTrails).

(sometimes) just put the gmapsupp.img with all of new england on the
device, renaming as Bill is doing, but I don't bother with subdirs.

All of new england is only 100M. I could put it up for download, but my
map has broken interstate routing since I merged 6 cloudmade extracts.

There are also ways w/o garmin software to merge multiple .img files
into one. sendmap can do it, and mkgmap might as well but I'm not sure.

Doesn't work with my 76csx either, which is fairly recent firmware i think.
